I Learn Something New Every Day

One of my favorite parts about being a mom is truly getting to know my boys.  Not long ago they were these tiny creatures who did nothing but eat, sleep and poop.  Now they are growing into little people. I swear every day I learn something new about them.  This past weekend, I learned two new(ish) things about Xander.

Xander does not like to be hot.  Not even a little bit.  When we went to the Outer Banks in June, Xander didn’t have much fun.  It was hot, and sandy and hot.  Now granted it was like 95 degrees, but he was clear in his displeasure that it was hot.  On Saturday, I took the boys to a pumpkin patch with some friends.  It was gorgeous day.  Not a cloud in the sky and about 80 degrees.  Someone was less than pleased.

When he gets hot, his cheeks get bright red (I was actually worried he was getting sun burn) and he is not his normal cheerful, laid back self.  He’s not cranky exactly, but he’s not happy.  I had mistakenly assumed when we were at the beach that it was just the 90 degree temperatures.  I was wrong.

That is not a smile

On Sunday we met other friends at the local playground (we were social butterflies this weekend).  I put shoes on Xander for the second time.  The first time being the day before.  Apparently, if you put shoes on a normally very active Xander, he will protest by sitting down and not moving.

He was seriously not happy about shoes.  He apparently thinks shoes are dumb and he’s not moving at all until the are removed from  his cute little feet.  The most adventerous thing he did was to stand next to the diaper bag.

Hopefully one day he’ll realize that there is a lot of fun to be had when it’s warm outside and that while boy shoes aren’t the cutest things around, they do serve a purpose.  Until then, we’ll keep practicing with the shoes.  And lucky for him, fall is here and there likely won’t be any 80 degree days for several months.
