To Xander, On His 1st Birthday
I can’t believe that it’s your first birthday already. I know every mom says it, but in some ways it truly does feel like I just brought you home from the hospital. It was just yesterday that you were a teeny, tiny scrunchy little baby. Now you are on the edge of turning into this tiny little person, no longer a baby. You went from this:
To this, seemingly overnight
You are all boy. You already love to wrestle and tumble around. You definitely have some mama’s boy in you, especially when you are tired. You are amazingly observant. You love to watch the world around you, soaking it all in. You have an opinion on almost everything and you are good at making those opinions known, but you are a generally easy-going little boy.
You ADORE your big brother. I can literally see the love in your eyes. You watch him like a hawk. You aren’t at the stage yet where you want to do everything that he’s doing, but it’s coming. It’s coming quickly.
My favorite part of the day with you is just before bed. We rock and cuddle and you drink your last bottle of the day as I breathe in the sweet smells of baby shampoo and the grown-up conditioner I use to keep your little curls tame. You sigh as you finish your bottle, we share a hug and then I put you in your crib where you drift off to sleep. It’s the last “baby” thing that you do and if you don’t mind, I’m gonna hold onto it for a while longer, ok?
It took me a while to realize, but I know it now, you have completed our family. You are the last piece of the puzzle. You (and your brother) fill my days and my heart with happiness and love. I love being your mommy. I love watching you grow up and discover the world. And most of all, I love you.
Happy Birthday Xanny!
